PETER CARLTON'S WILL OF DUPLIN County NC

Peter Carlton was minister, slave owner and a very prosperous man during his adult lifetime. His first wife Elizabeth who was his first cousin was also born into another prosperous slave owning Carlton family of Duplin County. From reading Peter's will of 1840, it appears that he and Elizabeth did not have any children and that it is a possibility that they were during this time the slave owners of my gg grandmother Nancy Carlton-Johnson who was born sometime around 1838. In the writing of his will Peter speaks of the slave girl Nancy several times.

I give to my wife the following Negroes namely Ben, Bill, Julia, Silus? and Susan with all their increase to her and her heirs for ever.
I give to my nephew Jessie? Carlton a Negro man named Irving or the money arising from the sale of the said Negroe to him and his heirs for ever.
I give to Hardy Carlton Junior. My nephew a Negro boy named Sam to him and his heirs for ever.
I lend to Tempey Lenyear, Murphy Lenyears's wife my niece a Negro boy named Joe during her life and after her death I give Joe to her lawful heirs to be divided equally between them for ever.
I lend to Hancy Alderman, George Alderman's wife my niece a Negro girl named Nancy during Hancy's life and after her death I give Nancy with all her increase to be equally divided between Hancy's lawful heirs for ever.
I lend to Phebe Willis my niece and Shadrack Willis' wife a Negro girl named Jenney during Phebe's life and after her death I give Jenney with all her increase to be equally divided between Phebe's lawful heirs for ever.
